77 Days to Go: Night Rows, Blisters, and Life Aboard ‘Lucy’

Preparing for the World’s Toughest Row

120 Hours of Training and Night-time Ocean Adventures

So sorry we have been quiet!

Let’s go through what we have been up to... In order to qualify for the race we have had to do some rowing on Lucy. There is a mandatory threshold of 120 hrs we have had to achieve within which there are a series of exercises and safety protocols you have to cover. We are pleased to say that we have more than covered  the hours required and covered off the drills that pass us off as being safe! For safe don't read competent.

From Blisters to Dolphins: Our Journey Aboard ‘Lucy’ and Counting Down to Race Day

We have rowed 8hrs straight as a pair resulting in some fairly tasty blisters. We have done some overnight crossings, met some seals, chased by some dolphins and out run some pirates (Joke). Learned to eat some of the bowel smashing food that we now call fuel and got bored of Wills favourite remix of Madonna music.

We have missed parties, family events and birthdays, laughed a lot and been really confused on the night crossings. We have made mistakes (lots of them) but most importantly we have learnt about Lucy, each other and ourself. Learning about yourself happens when you row against the tide twice off Rhoscolyn and get nowhere for two hours. Guest rowers have joined us and shown us how to do it properly (all lessons already forgotten) we had lots of people asking whether we are going to win (no, we are not) but mostly a great wave of encouragement. Thank you!

We are down to 77 days to go and it’s beginning to become very real indeed. Every hour spent with the family is an extra gram of gold in the memory bank and you do begin to savour what you have and what you will miss.
